Mount Barker Wines at ACCI Business After Hours at Maitraya

Ever been to Maitraya? Originally built by Paul Terry it is a multi-million dollar residence in Albany. I first went there when it was being built. It has something like 16 rooms, pool, and atrium and so on. But the view- built on enough acres to have a few golf courses (which it did at one stage) it has is own private beach with views of the great southern coastline. Even Tom Cruise came to look at buying it at one stage! I have been to a few weddings there but last Wednesday it played host to the Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business after Hours event co-hosted by Mount barker Wine Producers. We Co-hosted with HEM (PR), Shot By Nicci (photographer) and the Defence Reserve Support. Wineries included West cape Howe, Gilberts, Galafrey and Arcadia Wines.

Did you know the first grapes were planted in 1859 by George Edgerton Warburton on the St Werburghs property? No doubt for their own enjoyment as oppose to commercial venture. In 1930 Horticulturalist Bill Jamieson did some research in the area for the development of viticulture. In 1955 Canadian Professor Harold Olmo did some research as well followed by Dr John Gladstone in 1963. This research from these people was instrumental to the early pioneers of the wine industry who planted grapes in Mt Barker in 1965 at the Forrest Hill property. The reason some much research was done in the development of viticulture in Mt barker is because we have very similar climate as Bordeaux- the most famous wine region in the world. Bet you didn't know that Mount Barker Wine region is the Bordeaux of Australia!!
