The Winner of the Wine Press Club's

The George Mulgrave Award 2003

This award is nominated and awarded by the wine industry to someone for outstanding service to the wine industry. It was presented at the Annual Wine Press Club Royal Perth Show lunch . Ian received a standing ovation by his peers, Ian is one of the pioneers of the Great southern wine industry. Moved to Mt Barker in 1977, with his wife was pregnant with Kim and a truck load of furniture, starry eyed, enthusiastic, he was ready to start a new life. Far away from computers into this new thing called grape

That was 25 years ago, in that time Ian has used his drive and energies to support, promote Western Australian wines, the Great Southern and especially Mount Barker. He was one of the original members of the Mt Barker Wine Producers. He served as President of The Great southern Wine producers for 6 years, and 12 years for the  Mt Barker Wine Producers. He was one of the instigators who started the Mt Barker Wine Show, now called Qantas Western Australian Wine Show  Also the Great southern Wine Festival, the Mt Barker Wine Producers Winter Dinner, and the Budburst Dinner. All these events are used to spread the wine word and promote the area. Also promoting the local wines in Perth with the Great Southern Wine Tasting. All these events are still running today.

Ian was an associate judge at the Western Australian Wine Show and the Sheridan Wine Awards & was selected on the federal panel that worked on the wine vision 2010.  He was the president of the Great Southern Export  group, set up the promote wines to the world. Traveling to Singapore and Malaysia at his own expense to promote the area.

Ian is known as the jovial winemaker but if you asked anybody in the Great Southern district, specially Mt Barker they would testify on how much work over the years he has done in promoting the region & supporting local growers.

As well as being the backbone of Galafrey Wines, a small family run winery, he has selflessly always found time for new growers, always shared his knowledge of viticulture, exporting, wine making and tirelessly promoting the area Mt Barker. His passion for the wine industry has not waned in the last 25 years. He applies the same amount of energy and commitment to the Mt Barker industry as he does his own business.
