Ian Tyrer Fund

altORIGINAL ARTICLE- Written MARCH 2004

Twelve months have passed since well-known Mount Barker winemaker
Ian Tyrer lost his battle with cancer. At his funeral his wife Linda and daughter Kim set up a fund for the Plantagenet Hospital to raise money to buy an ultrasound machine. During Ian’s illness he had to travel 100kms for this treatment, a painful inconvenience especially late into his illness.
The target was $25,000.
But due to the generosity of his friends and colleagues a total of $47,333.20 has been raised to date. The ultra sound has purchased and already put to good use. So far over $41,000 has been spent on the following equipment-

Plantagenet Wines organised a wine raffle where the wineries thorough WA donated 60 dozen wines, raising about $7,000.
Last March wine industry members held a memorial dinner at the Court Wine Bar, Northbridge that raised $7,000, which would be used to renovate and refurbish the ‘Quiet Room’, which is also used for chemotherapy, Mental Health and meetings and in much need for a renovation. This project now in progress and will use most of the money left.
The emphasis of the fund has been to purchase items that will help people stay at home for as long as they can and make them comfortable as possible. Also to purchase things that the hospital needed but unlikely to get with government budget cuts.
The Tyrer family are overwhelmed with the generosity and support the community have given. And feel it is a reflection of the love and admiration they had for ‘the busy little winemaker’ Ian Tyrer.

2012 WA Wine Guide Ray Jordans , Premium Western Australian Wines, Mount Barker

Galafrey Dry Land Reserve Riesling 2010

These dry-grown Riesling from Galafrey can be really tight and steely when young, though this tends to conceal the intensity of the fruit within. This one has a wonderful purity of expression, with spotlessly clean lines and a fine precise acid. really promising wine for some cellaring 91/100 Prefect with freshly shucked oysters.

Galafrey Reserve Dry Grown Shiraz 2006

This was a fairly tough year in WA because it was so cool during vintage, yet this savoury, earthy shiraz from old vines in the Great Southern has come up trumps. Seamless and smooth, the nose shows some black peper and spice, while the palate is incrediably deep, though retaining some good Great Southern effortless finesse. 95/100 Prefect with rare eye fillet.

SBS Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2010

Fruity example of this standard WA blend. It's fruity with a crunchy passion fruit and tart gooseberry influence. Quite restrained yet with admirable palate persistence. 88/100

Ian Tyrer Award 2010- Shire of Plantagenet

The 2009 Ian Tyrer Award was awarded to Shire of Plantagenet.

In 2003 Ian Tyrer received the George Mulgure Award for outstanding service to the wine industry and later that year died of cancer. Therefore it was felt that an award in Ian Tyrer’s name to help reward and recognised people who also promoted Mount Barker be awarded at the Mount Barker Winter Dinner.

The 2010 award was presented at the Qantas Wine Show lunch at Plantagent wines on Friday 8th Oct to the Shire of Plantagenet. The Shire has supported the Mount Barker Wine Industry over many years with finianicial support and attending events and promoting the Mount Barker Area. The Mount Barker Wine producers look forward to continual support in the future as together they work to promote the area.

Ken Clement, the Shire President , accepted the award saying that it was nice to be recognozied for their support rather than always being expected to support as the Shire. He also spoke of fond memories of time spent with Ian Tyrer and look forward to opening the large six litre bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Hey Kim,

Kim,

That was great.

Don’t tell Nigel but you and Jack are identical as babies.

Most of all I like the photo of your mum holding you as a baby, and she hasn’t changed a bit.

Best wishes

Hi Kim

Thank you for a lovely and funny story about your Mum. I also have many memories of my Mum who died in 1990 when she was 90. We also enjoy your wine. We  have great memories of visiting your winery in 2004. There was a huge storm and we had to go around several trees over the road and through a paddock to eventually reach your doors!

Regards from Margery and Graham Stutchbury

Great story

Its really interesting as this approach is so superior to the usual “corporate” position taken by organisations and is all about relationship building with your customers.

Keep it up

I have to buy some that cap sav as well
