DRY GROWN MERLOT

Galafrey has only 19 rows of Merlot, so we only make a small amount which is proving difficult as it is so popular. It is difficult to keep up with demand. Merlot is a tricky grape to grow in cool climate areas. Good fruit set is difficult to achieve and canopy management is a must. Our dry grown vineyard helps with this but it still needs more love and attention than most grape varieties. But the fruit intensity is never a problem. Dark in colour, rich in flavour. Mulberries characteristics that take me back to my childhood. But Merlot is the queen of structure. Often blended or misrepresented, people are confused and unsure what to expect but at Galafrey you can expect a serious wine. Velvety structure. Try with our slow cook beef recipe.

DRY GROWN CAEBERNET SAUVIGNON

Oh caption, my caption. One third of the vineyard is cabernet so we are very serious about cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon. A great variety, small leaves, large tight bunches and big gnarly vine trunks. Cabernet Sauvignon is big and bold, with lashings of character. Cassis and violets, deep rich colour, big structure and chewy tannins. Cool climate and dry grown Cabernet Sauvignon is a serious wine. Once we had a french winemaker come visit us during vintage and try all our wines. He loved them and called us the winery of flowers as all our wines had floral notes. In the Cabernet you are looking for violets! Try with our Ousso Bucco recipe.

DRY GROWN SHIRAZ

mmmm.....pepper and sweet fruit...no wonder it goes so well lamb. This wine is my husband’s favourite. It opens with lifted spice and black pepper aromas cutting through deeper vanillin oak. Sourced from our own Dry Grown Vineyard.
Palate: This wine is very impressive. The medium weight palate is supple and soft with nice balance of fruit and oak. A gentle and persuasive wine that creeps and delivers by stealth and is a typical Shiraz that comes from this part of the world.Try with our lamb shank with bacon and mushroom recipe.

PINOT NOIR

Pinot Noir is a cool climate grape variety and this is a cool climate area. Quite a deep garnet colour, this Pinot Noir has all the hallmarks of beautiful concentrated cool climate fruit. Started with wild yeast ferment this pinot shows no gamey, meaty, sweaty leather characteristics but rather strawberries and black cherries. On the palate is sweet berry fruit with nice crisp dry tannins and beautifully elegant like a good Pinot can only be! It has been awhile since Galafrey released a Pinot so I am looking forward to drinking this wine myself and will be having it with my Christmas dinner and beyond!!  Try with our Roast Duck and cherry sauce recipe.

FRANKLAND RIVER SHIRAZ

Dark red-purple in colour. Black cherry, plum and some fleshy characters on the nose. Medium-ripe palate showing good fruit characters married to fine oak before nice long finish. A very nicely made shiraz showing the cooler spectrum characters. Fruit sourced from the Frankland River Region 50km north of Mount Barker, the characteristically cool climate of the district ensures slow ripening of the grapes, which also allows for the development of rich flavour and quality grape juice. Grown on ancient gravely loams in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, an area renowned for excellence in cool climate viticulture. We source this fruit to make a more approachable style of Shiraz at a price point which is different from our own Dry Grown Shiraz. Try it with our Moroccan Lamb recipe.

CABERNET MERLOT

Traditionally Galafrey don't do blends however Cabernet Merlot are very Popular and ours is no different. We source this fruit from nearby vineyard so that we can retain regional characteristics of Mount Barker But sell it at a more affordable price point. This is a great casual wine, ripe luscious fruit , slight fruit cake and mulberry characteristics. Try with our Lamb Ragu recipe.
