Galafrey Wines 2012 Dry Land Riesling
Galafrey Dry Land Riesling 2012

Still hasn't lost its quirky appeal, the name of this winery. I used to hide behind the sofa when Davros came on the telly....
A little talc perfume, lime and tangerine, gentle sherbetty fruit and a lemon and green apple after-taste Has a little bitterness and fractionally coarse acidity, but it's a very good Riesling nevertheless. Good drinking.

What ho! We've got a live one on our hands here.
Intense fruit power here – a thunderclap of lime and tangerine with a subdued talc perfume, slate and subtle chalkiness, a burst of crackling acidity and a grapefruit pith finish of excellent length. As a young wine, much of its power lies in the mid-palate, though it will stretch and even out with bottle age. A robust and slightly rustic expression of Riesling, but an ever so tasty one.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc named for Galafrey founder Ian Tyrer. Nice sentiment.
Red and black fruit, camphor and cedar, tobacco, chocolate, damp earth – love the smell. It's medium bodied with plenty of depth and semi-mature Cabernet intrigue, ripe tannin and a clip of fresh strawberry-like acidity. Length with it. Lovely wine for a Claret fancier.

Well, I thought I'd lost these samples, but found them in a dark corner under the house.
Black fruit, black olive, damp earth, dark chocolate, violet and a little mint and dried herb. Mmmmm. Medium weight, but powerful, with grippy chalky tannin and fresh red berry acidity. Has length. Love the grunt this uncompromising Cabernet offers – like St Estephe (don't mind me). Personality plus.

Galafrey 2010 Pinot Noir
Galafrey 2010 Pinot Noir

Galafrey, from over Great Southern way in Western Australia, is run by mum and daughter combo of Linda and Kim Tyrer. Linda was one of the pioneers of the region and the team continue to work hard pushing the best assets of their region. Pinot Noir isn't necessarily synonymous with Mount Barker, but I reckon there has been an upswing in recent years to make it somewhere to have firmly planted on the radar.
Concentrated aromas of blackberry, sweet red berries, cola and earthy, gamey meatiness. Bold flavours in the palate, with a slick, machine oil texture that pushes with warm spice and a wash of block acidity. Big pinot noir here, its presence felt in every corner of the mouth, but not overbearing in viscosity, some light and shade in this wine. Alcohol heat and the burr of furry oak tannin does shift some of the fruit aside, but for those seeking muscular expressions of the variety, this is well composed.
